By Joan. I live in Poblenou, so the beach is a part of Barcelona I use rather than visit, and Barceloneta is the busiest stretch of it. In August I walk further up the coast, but if you only have two days and no time to go looking, Barceloneta is the sensible choice.
About Barceloneta Beach
This is the closest beach to the city center, about ten minutes away on the metro. It was built as a fishermen's neighborhood on land reclaimed from the sea in the 18th century, and it still has the old market and the traditional paella restaurants, which are not the cheapest lunch in the city but are the ones with the water in front of them. The 1.1 km of sand fills up in summer. Out of season I would come anyway and walk the seafront promenade instead of sitting down, which is what most of us who live here do in the cold months.
