By Joan. Tibidabo is where I would send you once you have done the famous things and you want to understand how big Barcelona actually is. It is a long way up for a city that is otherwise flat, and getting there is half of the day.
About Tibidabo
The hill is 512 meters high, crowned by the Sagrat Cor basilica and by one of the oldest amusement parks in Europe, open since 1901. The way up is the historic Tramvia Blau and then the funicular, both old, both part of the outing rather than a detail of it. If you are travelling with children, the vintage rides are the whole point. If you are not, you can skip the park completely, because the terrace on the basilica roof gives the best free panoramic view in the city, out to the Mediterranean on a clear day. Check the calendar before you commit, the park runs weekends only out of season.
