Barcelona Airport to City Centre 2026: Aerobus, Metro, Train

By Joan. I have lived in Barcelona for 16 years and I still take the Aerobus more often than anything else on this list.

Barcelona El Prat Airport (BCN) sits 12 km from the city center. You can be at your hotel 25 minutes after baggage claim if you pick the right transport, and the right one depends less on the fare than on where you are sleeping. Here are all five options compared, plus the one I would take in your shoes.

Quick answer: For most visitors the winner is the Aerobus, from €7.25, 35 min to Plaza Catalunya with the suitcase next to you and no transfers. Cheapest from both terminals: metro L9 Sud, 32 min, €5.50. Fastest to the hotel door: taxi, 25 min, €35-45 flat rate. Best for groups: private transfer, from €45. Fares change, so check the current one before you count on it.

How I ranked them

I ordered these by what I would take myself with a suitcase in hand, not by what pays anybody a commission. Direct beats cheap when you are tired, and every transfer drops an option down the list. If you are travelling as a group the order flips, so read the last one first.

1. Aerobus

From €7.25. 35 min to Plaza Catalunya. Stops are curbside at both terminals and it takes contactless card, so there is nothing to queue for. It is not the fastest and it is not the cheapest, and it is still the one I recommend most often, because arriving somewhere central without changing vehicles is worth more than the difference.

2. Metro L9 Sud

From €5.50. 32 min. There is a station beneath each terminal, which is why this is the cheapest route that works no matter where you land. The catch is the transfer: unless your hotel is on the line, you will change with your bags, and that is where the saving quietly goes.

3. Taxi

From €35, flat rate. 25 min. Taxis wait in a dedicated rank outside arrivals. The flat rate is the good part, because it protects you from the meter, and I would use it without hesitation for a hotel in the Gothic Quarter or Barceloneta, where the metro turns into a walk with wheels on cobbles.

4. Renfe R2 train

From €4.90. 25 min to Sants or Passeig de Gracia. It is a short walk or a free shuttle from T2, and it does not serve the other terminal at all. Cheap and quick if the geography lines up for you, useless if it does not.

5. Private airport transfer

From €45. 25 min, fixed price. Meet and greet at arrivals with a name sign, sedan for up to 3 or van for up to 8. On my own I would never book this. With a group, a stroller and a pile of cases, splitting €45-65 between everybody is the calmest arrival in the list.

Best option by hotel area

• Eixample near Sagrada Familia: taxi, or metro L9 plus one transfer
• Plaza Catalunya or Las Ramblas: Aerobus, direct
• Gothic Quarter: taxi for the cobblestone access, or Aerobus plus a 5 min walk
• Barceloneta or Port: taxi, because the metro means transfers
• Sants area: Renfe R2 train from T2

How to find each option at the airport

Follow the Ground Transportation signs from arrivals and the whole thing is easier than it looks on a map. Aerobus stops are curbside at both terminals. Taxis are in a dedicated rank outside arrivals. Metro L9 Sud has a station beneath each terminal. The Renfe R2 train is a short walk or free shuttle from T2. Private transfers meet you at arrivals with a name sign.

Before you get in the queue

• Buy the Hola Barcelona card in advance if you want the airport metro and city transport on the same ticket.
• The taxi flat rate protects you from meter surprises. Confirm the destination before the car moves.
• Renfe R2 and the Aerobus both take contactless card, so there is no reason to queue at a machine.
• Ignore anyone offering you a ride inside the arrivals hall and walk to the official taxi rank.
• Every fare here is a from price and it can change before your trip. Check the current one before you budget for it.

None of these options is a mistake, which is the good news after a long flight. Pick the one that matches your hotel, not the one that matches your budget, because the difference between the cheapest and the dearest is smaller than one bad transfer with a suitcase.
