Barcelona Beach Day: Barceloneta + Beach Clubs

By Joan. I have lived in Barcelona for 16 years, in Poblenou, which means the far end of this stretch of sand is my local beach.

Barcelona is one of the only European cities with a proper beach within walking distance of the old town. Four city beaches, a handful of beach clubs and an afternoon of paella make an easy day off the sightseeing treadmill. The only decision that matters is which end of the sand you walk to.

Quick answer: If you only get one beach day, walk past the first beach and take Bogatell, the locals favorite, with cleaner sand and fewer people. Barceloneta is the classic, crowded and lively, and closest to the center. Nova Icaria is the one for families. Beach clubs: W Hotel, Pacha, Opium. Paella lunch at Can Sole, serving since 1903, or La Mar Salada, and budget €25-40 per person. Book the table ahead, and check current prices before you go, because they move with the season.

• Bogatell is a short walk further along the same sand and feels like a different city.
• Nova Icaria has the calmest water, which is why families end up there without planning to.

• The sunset move is the promenade toward the W Hotel, with or without a drink at the top.

How I ranked the beaches

I put these in the order I would use them myself, walking from the old town outwards, not in order of fame. Every extra minute of walking buys you space on the sand, and that is the entire trade. If you disagree and want the noise and the promenade, start at the first one and stay there.

The four city beaches

1. Bogatell

The locals favorite, cleaner sand, a bit less crowded, and far enough out that the drink sellers thin out. This is the one I would tell a friend to walk to, and the walk is the point.

2. Barceloneta

Barceloneta: 1.1 km of sand, closest to the center, the liveliest promenade and most of the restaurants. It is the classic for a reason and it is crowded for the same reason. Go if you want the scene, not if you want to read a book.

3. Nova Icaria

Families, calm water, Port Olimpic nearby for lunch and shade. If you are travelling with small children this is where I would put the towel, because the sea does less arguing here.

4. Mar Bella

Surfers, and a nudist section at one end, which is worth knowing before you settle in with the family. It is the furthest out and the youngest crowd of the four.

The paella lunch

Real Catalan paella is wood-fired, with rice that soaks up the stock and a crisp bottom layer called socarrat, which is the part people fight over. Can Sole in Barceloneta has been serving since 1903. La Mar Salada and Can Majo are the contemporary alternatives. Budget €25-40 per person and book ahead, because the good rooms fill and the ones with photographs of paella outside never do.

Sunset

Walk the Barceloneta seafront promenade toward the W Hotel. Cocktails at the Eclipse bar on the 26th floor give 360° views over the city and the sea. You are paying for the height rather than the drink, and once in a while that is a fair deal.

Before you go

• Book the paella table before you leave the hotel. Lunch on the seafront without a reservation is how people end up eating badly.
• Take as little as you can carry. The city beaches are city beaches and bags left alone are bags left alone.
• Walk the extra stretch. Bogatell and Mar Bella cost you nothing but time and give you back the space.
• Shade is scarce on all four beaches, so plan the middle of the day around lunch rather than around the sand.
• The €25-40 figure is a from budget for a proper paella, not a fixed price, and it changes with the season. Check before you sit down.

A local food tour that includes the paella lunch and a visit to the Barceloneta market. Worth it on a first visit if you want somebody to explain what you are eating, less so if you already know what socarrat is and just want a table by the water.

A beach day is the thing visitors cut first and regret last, and this city makes it too easy to skip. Give it an afternoon, walk further than you meant to, and eat late.
