By Joan. Eating well is half of why people come here, and it is also where short trips go wrong most predictably. The bars with the photo menus and the paella pictures outside are not where anyone I know eats. Sixteen years in this city and I still walk past them with a small, unfair sense of superiority.
Quick answer: on a two-day trip the guided evening tapas crawl is the highest-value food booking you can make. It strings together four to six bars in a neighbourhood like El Born, the Gothic Quarter or Gracia, mixing Catalan classics, pan amb tomaquet, croquetas, anchovies and grilled vegetables with vermouth or local wine, and it covers dinner, a neighbourhood walk and a cultural primer in one slot.
How I would choose
I have ordered these by what solves the most problems in the least time, which on a short trip is the only ranking that matters. Not by what sounds most special.
1. The evening tapas crawl
Four to six bars in one neighbourhood, with the stories behind each place, which is the part you cannot get from a map. It doubles as a low-key way to see a district after dark without planning a route yourself, and that is genuinely useful on your first night. If you only book one food thing, book this.
2. The Boqueria market walk
The daytime option, at the market off Las Ramblas, where a guide explains the jamon, the seafood and the produce stalls and steers you to the two or three counters worth queuing for. That last part is the whole value. The market is crowded and most of the front stalls are there for the crowd, not for the food.
3. The cooking class
This goes further, taking you to the market first and then into a kitchen to make paella or seafood fideua. It is the one I would pick if you have already been to Barcelona, or if the point of the trip is to bring something home other than photographs. On a first two-day visit it costs you a big chunk of the day, so weigh that honestly.
Before you book
Come hungry and skip a big late lunch, because people underestimate how much food a crawl actually is. Tell your guide about allergies at booking. Barcelona kitchens handle dietary needs well when they are warned ahead, and badly when they are not. If you are travelling with children, the market walk during the day works better than a late crawl. If the budget is tight, do the market yourself in the morning and put the money into the evening instead.
