By Joan. I have lived in Barcelona for 16 years, in Poblenou, and I would not stay in my own neighbourhood on a trip this short. It is a lovely place to live and the wrong place to sleep for 48 hours.
Quick answer: for a short trip, book in the Eixample. It is flat, it is central, the metro is everywhere and you can walk to more than you expect. Pick the Gothic Quarter instead if you want medieval streets outside the door and you do not mind noise at night.

The one thing I would tell you
On a trip this short, location beats the room. Every extra stop between your bed and the old city is time you paid for and did not get. I would take a plain room in the middle over a beautiful one on the edge, every time.
My advice by traveller
If the budget is tight, look slightly uphill rather than slightly out, because Gracia stays well connected. If you are travelling with children, prioritise a lift and a quiet street over a famous address. If this is your first visit, stay central and accept the noise. If you have been before, this is when the beach or Gracia starts to make sense.
Before you book
- Check the actual walk to the nearest metro, not the district name. The Eixample is large.
- Ask about air conditioning in summer. It matters here more than the photographs suggest.
- Prices change, so check the current one before you book anything.
Nobody remembers the room afterwards. They remember whether they spent their mornings walking into the city or waiting to get to it.
